Preserving Latino, Chicano and Mexican-American history is a priority for the “We Made San Diego” Project. While recent successful sold-out screenings of the short documentary, “We Made San Diego- For All” made an impact on the audiences that attended, we’ve decided to try the podcast approach.

What exactly is the difference between a documentary and podcasts? Let’s explore.

Content: Documentaries are factual material that is interpreted and shaped for entertainment or education. Podcasts can be about a variety of topics, including news, true stories, or fiction.
Production: Documentaries are often recorded outside of studios and are highly edited.
Podcasts are typically released in episodes at regular intervals.
Audience engagement: Documentaries are meant to guide the viewer to a particular point of view. Podcasts are a good way to engage an audience on a deeper level.
Cost: Podcasts are relatively inexpensive to produce compared to other media.

Hosted by author Maria E. Garcia and produced by David Sawicki of YoungPop, this podcast is going to shine a light on the amazing people who’ve made an impact on America’s Finest City.

Production has begun on two episodes. The first episode, titled: “So much drama!” will have guest William Virchis join Maria and talk about his life and upcoming production in December. Virchis is a Playwright, Director, Teacher, and Wrestling Coach in the San Diego area. He was the Artistic Director for the Southwestern Community College Theater Department and was recently awarded the Jaguar Award by the college.

The next episode will have Maria with San Diego actor Jordan Jacobo. Jacobo shares his family history from escaping Nazi Germany, to fleeing to Monterey, Mexico, to finding community and belonging alongside other Jewish-Mexican immigrants. His curiosity and interest in the Chicano community became a fascinating study of the genre.
