Roberto Pozos & Danny Hernandez: “Bringing People Together”
The September Video Podcast is very special, it is about friendship, activism and supporting each other. Danny Hernandez and Robert Pozos became friends at a very young age. The fact is, Francisco, Danny’s brother, actually hired Robert when he was 13 years old to do some artwork. That was the first time anyone in Roberto’s family received a paycheck for a job that did not include working in the fields. Their friendship continued when they were at Imperial Valley college and became stronger when they were both at SDSU.
They were in MEChA together and of course participated in various activities of the Chicano Movement. Danny was so proud when Roberto opened his business and would recommend Roberto for various jobs along the way.
When we had the first presentation of WE MADE SAN DIEGO in 2022, Danny was the closing speaker. Roberto did the layout for my book WE MADE SAN DIEGO and, as the author, I feel he did an outstanding job. Roberto is not only an excellent artist, he has represented the Latino community in many ways. It may have been painting a mural or making a logo for a local business.
After Danny’s death, the Celebration of Life committee asked Roberto to create a mural. Roberto had worked on other murals, but this mural was an act of love and friendship. As you view this Podcast, you will have the opportunity get to know Robert as he highlighted Danny as an activist and shares stories of the many times they worked together.
You will also come to understand how successful and versatile Robert has become. In the book, I ask the question: Is he an artist or a businessman? Watch this Podcast and decide for yourself. Danny was a friend, a husband and a Chicano activist. Actually, I consider Roberto a wonderfully complicated person. He is a father, a grandfather, a partner in a loving relationship and, yes, an artist. Happy Birthday Danny and thank you, Roberto, for being a wonderful artist and friend for all of us. We appreciate and love you.
